President Neil opened the meeting by quoting from the 1993/94 RI President Robert Barth of Aarau, Switzerland. His Rotary vision was: Believe in what your do -Do what you believe in. In his address to the 1994 RI Convention in Taipei, Taiwan, he said: If you want to see another century of Rotary, we must make Rotary attractive to young people. Many young people share our beliefs. To get them involved in Rotary, we must concentrate on activities that capture their attention, so they are willing to make a commitment. It is not the responsibility of young people to come to our clubs. It is ours to invite them. Neil noted that we have worked closely with youth through the local Interact Club and have just received a cheque from them in the amount of $2,500 to support our charitable activities. What a magnificent gesture from this small club at Oak Bay High. Last November, this same club donated $4,500 for the Malawi Girls Secondary School. It is up to us to ensure they maintain these high ideals of service by eventually joining Rotary.
O Canada was led by Tom Croft and Doug McDougal said grace.
Sergeant at Arms, Dallas Chapple, was out to lighten our wallets, and wasted no time in extracting a few dollars from:
1) Wynn Taylor for losing his name badge and from Joe Prentice for wandering about instead of greeting guests
2) Anne Sims on behalf of the HSBC bank because one of their employees won the Rotary Smart Car at the recent fundraising draw
3) John Edgell who reckoned his fun-filled vacation was worth every penny of a $10 fine. Special Sartorial fines were levied on Jack Petrie for his purple garb (when I am old, I shall wear purple!), Wolf Schopper for his navy linen suit, and Ross McLaughlin for sporting a snazzy peaked cap. Recognition was extended to Bill and Jean Sharlow on the occasion of their 67th wedding anniversary and belatedly to Ron Cooley for his birthday.

Be There or Be Square (An introduction to ClubRunner by Tricia Timmermans)
In her introduction, Lynne Murray provided some interesting background material on Tricia Timmermans, our resident web manager and Club expert on all things graphic. Her curious nature led her early to the world of ham radio and the delights of Morse Code and more recently to professional photography and the design of web sites. She is here today to lead us through the simple mechanics of Club Runner, the system purchased in order to centralize Club activities, and how each member can get the most out of it.
is an online membership communication tool. It provides for easy management of attendance records, day to day club activities and a directory of members (no more need for an annual printed member roster!). Tricia demonstrated through the use of slides how one clicks into the ClubRunner website and how one moves about the site. Most of us should now be able to adjust our personal information as it changes and even change our photograph should we tire of the existing one.
This reporter noticed that President Neil has started to issue eBulletins on the ClubRunner site. His eBulletin for August 13 talks about the ease of operation and the security controls in effect over our private information. Lynne’s introduction of Tricia got me thinking that perhaps the eBulletin is the ideal spot to re-introduce member biographies on a monthly basis.
Wolf Schopper thanked Tricia for her presentation. There was some reference to her presentation easing the challenge of computers for most people, but the din in the room drowned out most of his remarks.

Some important members caught by Pres. Neil.
Announcements
1) Our proposal to provide $6,000 for a bike shelter in Oak Bay has been forwarded to the municipal council.
2) The printed member roster for 2008-09 is now available. Only one correction is needed (so far!). Joe Prentice now resides at ... removed for privacy reasons. It's available on our private ClubRunner site.
3) Rotary is considering a Canadian magazine to be issued quarterly. Judging from the favourable show of hands, the $4.00 extra per annum should not be an obstacle.
4) Next Tuesday will be “Family Day” and a BBQ will be held on the terrace at the Oak Bay Recreation Center.
5) Brian Lamb, as Volunteer Coordinator for the 2008 Oak Bay Golf Tournament is recruiting workers for August 22nd.
6) President Neil directed us to the August issue of the Rotarian, in particular the article entitled “Rotary Basics” on page 55. It’s a good read for new and prospective members.
