ANNOUNCEMENTS
The club is hosting a hot dog stand as a fundraiser at the 7th Annual Art Show & Sale at Bowker Creek Park on August 7.
On August 9 our Club will have a barbecue meeting at the Oak Bay Rec Centre
and friends and family are invited.
On August 14, the Club has a refreshment stand, a raffle and a couple of antique
cars on show at the Collector Car Festival. This is an annual event held on Oak
Bay Avenue.
Celebrations Master and fashionista Lorna Curtis fined the men who were not
wearing black shoes or sandals, and the women who were not wearing sandals. Jack Petrie tossed his shoes into the middle of the room as a display of rebellion
or perhaps just humour.
Joan Peggs spent 'happy money' because her birthday
the previous Saturday was a sunny day. Leslie drew a black marble in the 50/50
draw and so the main prize increases.

Mary Canty introduced guest speaker Franka LaBella (above) of Grannys Closet who
assists seniors with her personal assistance business to downsize and relocate
to another home. Though she does not advertise, her business is referred by
past clients. Franka had several interesting stories to tell.
She told of finding explosives left over from a war in one home. The police were
asked for advice and they recommended immediate evacuation of the home!
Franka needs to be careful about what gets discarded. A lady client had bought
2 lamps in 1952 for $29.95, and they were worth $12,000 each today. Another
client had kept paper grocery bags, but in each bag was the change that the
cashier had given him. The change totalled $1800!
One elderly gentleman showed Franka a bracelet that his mother found when a
Nazi soldier dropped it. A jeweler cleaned it and found that it was made of
platinum and was decorated with Faberge egg charms - and it was extremely
valuable.
As well as sorting through possessions, Franka stages her clients' residences for
resale, and organizes the move to their new residences.
Franka says that her job "feeds her soul" because she is helping people to
relocate more easily. Her job is always an adventure when she finds treasures
and hears stories of people's lives.
We watched Youtube video of the girls at the Malawi Girls School Atsikana Pa
Ulendo (Girls On The Move) as they sang a song which they wrote. The song
is called 'We'll Never Be the Same Again" and it is awesome and inspiring to see
these successful students singing together. Some individual members are
supporting the school and our Club has allocated another $2000 to the school.
More about this school on the website: www.malawigirlsonthemove.com and on the blog at www.apumalawi.blogspot.com (I have uploaded the movie to this blog. - tt) |

Are you a hot dog?
C'mon ... join the rest of us hot dogs on Sunday August 7th in our hot dog stand at the Bowker Creek Brush-up. It's a roving art show that drew more than 3,000 people last year. Our club is cooking up dogs, making people happy…making new friends (and new members?) and making money for our club too. Our spot is near Oak Bay High. Can I count on you for a 2-hour shift? We'd set up at 10, open at 11, close down at 4. Thank you. I'll bring the sign-up sheet next Tuesday but if you can let me know before then, it'd sure help.
Shifts 10-12, 12-2, 2-4. Jack.
