GUEST SPEAKER
The speaker of the day, Sandra Martin of the Globe and Mail, was eloquently introduced by Perry Bamji .
Sandra, a senior features writer with The Globe and Mail, is an award winning journalist and broadcaster. She has received the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy from The Toronto Star, a Canadian Journalism Fellowship to study at the University of Toronto, and several National Magazine Awards. She is The Globe’s chief obituary writer, but is currently on leave from that job and is teaching journalism in the Writing Department at the University of Victoria.
Ms. Martin (pictured at right) presented a wonderful lecture on her role as an obituary writer which has given her so much knowledge and enjoyment learning about others' lives, professions and accomplishments.
There is a large degree of responsibility and creativity, not to mention deadlines involved in the job. Despite attempts by editors to keep obits on prominent people up to date, their deaths almost always catch the newspaper unprepared and the obit writer has a lot of research and last-minute writing to do. Sandra cautioned our use of the Internet and technology to replace the traditional writing skills of editors and writers. She emphasized that even though obituaries now can include pictures and links to videos that enhance the person's life works, preparation and last-minute work on deadline is needed to bring us the full story and deeper meaning of a person's life. For more from Sandra, read this excellent article entitled "Confessions of an Obituarist" in the online Globe and Mail.
Sandra was thanked by Mark Bedford. |
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
June 15th will be the Installation dinner for the new Board and a big party to introduce incoming Pres John Edgell.
Lorna reminded us of the Guess Whose Coming to dinner event this weekend. Should be a great bunch of fun.
Lorna also reminded us that May 15th is our big fundraiser - an Italian night at the Monterey Centre. All members will need to contribute in some way especially by donating Silent Auction items. Lorna will email all members a letter that you can use to ask businesses to donate to the auction. (The letter was sent Wednesday). The sign up sheet also went around. Everyone can contribute somehow for this event so its becomes the most successful ever!!

Quote for Today:
I was sleeping and dreamt that life was pure joy; I awakened to
see that life was mere service; then I served and saw that serving was joy.
