First, THE PARTY. On Saturday, May 24, Rotarians and their partners gathered at the home of President Jack and his wife, Brannan for a great BBQ. Jack served up delicious Bison Burgers, the wine and food flowed non-stop, and were great. We were also blessed with an unusually balmy evening, so could enjoy ourselves on the spacious patio and lawn of the Petrie home. Our most sincere thanks to Jack and Brannan for their generous hospitality and to Heather and Lorna for organizing the affair and the games.
President Jack presided and called on Tom Lidkea to play for O Canada and David Sills to recite grace.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests, introduced by Rod Sim:
Liz Ashton, Harbourside, Education - College;
Christopher Causton, Harbourside, guest of Lorna Curtis.
Rebecca Marshall was the guest of Jim Force,
Michael Prescott was a guest of Jack Petrie,
Terry William was a guest of Peter Johannknecht;
Lorne Middleton was a guest of Lorna Curtis.
Announcements:
Will Carter reminded the members that the Oak Bay Tea Party, which is a major club fundraiser will be held on the weekend of the 6, 7 and 8 June at Willow’s Park. He made a plea for volunteers, because there are quite a few time slots still to be filled in.
Jim Force was pleased that members had donated $1,000 toward a Shelterbox, and with aid from the Club, one will be purchased for Burma.

Mayor Christopher Causton was on hand to receive (or give?) a check for $15,000 in connection
with the Waterpark, but in the absence of the reporter’s minutes your Editor cannot give the correct details.

Sergeant-at-Arms
Brian Lamb was cut short today and only had time to supervise the draw, which was won, for the second week running, by Hans Ockermueller. Brian remarked that there wasn’t much in the main pot, and no wonder, for Hans had drawn the white marble last week.

Guest Speaker
Rebecca Marshal - Adventures in Citizenship
Rebecca is a student from Oak Bay High whom our Club sponsored to go to Ottawa for the 58th program. For four days, 220 high school students from every province gathered in Ottawa for a packed program of observation, participation and fun. Rebecca gave us a superb PowerPoint presentation of her trip. Among her highlights was meeting a diplomat from Switzerland at a Foreign Affairs presentation (no mention of the recent pecadillos therein) and meeting the Speaker of the House, and a guided tour of the Parliament
Buildings. At a presentation and discussion at Carleton University, students from every part of the country presented different views on foreigh trade relations. On the last evening there was a dinner and dance with artistic performances. This was obviously a memorable occasion for Rebecca and members of the Club can feel that sponsoring her, as with all previous recipients, was a very well worthwhile use of our funds.
Exchange Student - Ola
Ola was introduced by Tom Croft. As we know, Ola is from Poland. She also made a PowerPoint presentation of her country, starting with its founding in 966. It was, however,
not recognized on a map of Europe for more than a century (some things never change!). Ola had slides of various cities including her own, Bydgoszcz. There were also presentations of various holidays (she regretted no Halloween) and a number of foods special to Poland. She had lots of funny comments which had the members in stitches.
Ola was thanked by Perry Bamji.
