Program for November 27 reported by David Philip. Click here for PRINT VERSION

President Jack discussed the work of the R.I. Foundation and noted that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had just awarded R.I. with a $200 Million dollar Challenge Grant for the eradication
of polio, the largest grant in Rotary’s 102 year history. In the absence of Tom Lidkea AND a locked piano, Tom Croft led the singing of O Canada and David Sills said grace.
Visiting Rotarian introduced by Barbara Bristol:
Erika Schmidt, Seattle 4, P.R. |
Announcements:
Christmas Party: Heather Aked reminded us that it is on Dec. 11, 6.00 for 7:00PM at the University Faculty Club. Parking is only $2 flat rate after Six.
Mary Canty gave a report on the Health of the Club, in particular, the progress being made by Mark Bedford. She announced that Mark was now home recuperating. In particular, she mentioned the part played by John Snively in his daily visitations
to Mark pre-and post-operatively. John received a deserved round of applause.

Sergeant-at-Arms: |
Leslie Rogers-Warnock appears to have stuck her neck out a mile with a mild criticism of the Sergeant-at-Arms and Brian Lamb was happy to relinquish the role of Sergeant at Arms for the day. Leslie was up to the task.
According to Leslie, the Fireside meeting was a great success, commenting on the quality
and taste of the best scalloped potatoes she had tasted which had been made by Nels Granewall. The other comment was of the quality of the butter tarts supplied by Lorna Curtis. Rotary Jeopardy was a great success.
Leslie fined members who had not cleaned their gutters. She levied fines on those who had started Christmas too early. Lorna, with her relationship with the Oak Bay Recreation Center, was fined for having a part in displaying the beautiful Christmas tree in the dining room.
Pablo is having a birthday on December 1 and was serenaded by all with a rousing rendition
of “ Happy Birthday to Pablo.”
The draw was won by Barb but she plucked the black marble from the bag. |
Tav Macpherson conferred a Paul Harris fellowship on Margaret Patrick. Margaret is a relatively new member of the club and was commended strongly on her support of the Foundation.
Tav showed a movie detailing the extent of the participation of Rotary in the stamping out of the curse of Polio. This acted as a warmup to the anticipated auction of donations to the foundation, by virtue of the sale of the proceeds of fines collected during the year. These were augmented to make it a worthwhile contribution to the Foundation with a tax write-off as an incentive. The highlights of the movie were the 1985 inception of Rotary’s Polio Plus program. The great success worldwide by all Rotary clubs, spurred even politicians to participate and provide funds to buy vaccine. This is especially true of the United Nations. Rotary international, proved to be the catalyst for the entire program. As Rotary members, we should all be proud of this.
The Tax Receipt Auction was ably handled with aplomb by Tom Croft. Results as follows:

Tom Croft was thanked by Tav in glowing terms.
The auction ended at 1:15 p.m. and President Jack reminded everyone that their cheques for their purchases should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Oak Bay and delivered to Treasurer David Sills, as soon as possible.
Editor’s Note: Last year’s auction yielded a total of $9,575, so the result this year represents
an increase of 27%.
Congratulations Everyone!
